History has been made following American figure skater Adam Rippon’s qualification for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, making him the United States first openly gay athlete to ever qualify for the Winter Olympics.
According to NBC, the 28-year-old openly gay Olympics rookie will be joined in the 2018 South Korea’s games by fellow American figure skaters 17-year-old, Vincent Zhou, and 18-year-old, Nathan Chen, 18.
Along with officially being the first openly gay athlete selected for a US Winter Olympics team, Rippon may also be, according to research conducted by LGBTI sports site Outsports, “the first publicly out gay man ever selected to a Winter Olympics team from any country in any sport.”
Rippon who has been described as graceful In the rink, able to execute the esteemed “quad lutz,” a quadruple spinning jump once thought impossible. Off the ice, however, Rippon is described as a firebrand and one who does not shy away from his sexuality.
